From New Buffalo to Holland

New Buffalo, Michigan is a small, but modern town that is located along the Galien River on the southwest Michigan lakeshore. Only minutes from the Indiana border and approximately 90 minutes from Chicago, New Buffalo is a popular tourist attraction, especially from the Memorial to Labor Day holidays that feature many festivals. These festivals have been known to attract crowds from all over Michigan and Chicago area. Recently, The Times of Northwest Indiana voted New Buffalo the “Best Michigan Downtown” and the “Best Michigan Place to Live”. With Lake Michigan in full view, quaint shops, delicious restaurants, and unforgettable treats, New Buffalo is considered paradise for many.

Away from the downtown area of New Buffalo, Four Winds Casino & Resort brings in visitors from around the country to see and experience what would be one of the largest casinos on the Las Vegas strip. Apart from gaming, the campus of Four Winds includes five restaurants, headlined by Hard Rock Cafe, a spa, 415 luxurious hotel rooms, and a variety of entertainment.

New Buffalo is also known for two golf courses that can be considered challenging (to say the least), whether you are a professional or a weekend-warrior. Whittaker Woods Golf Club is an 18-hole course that is nestled in the quiet forest area and lush, green pocket of Michigan. On the other side of town lies The Dunes Club. This nine-hole course is not a walk in the park as Sports Illustrated once named it the best nine-hole course in the country, despite the absence of golf carts.

Whether just visiting for a weekend, staying the summer months in a summer home, or a year round resident, New Buffalo is a special place to many. New Buffalo provides a vast amount of memories due to the wide variety of happenings and popular spots that can be found all over town.

Close to New Buffalo is a division called Harbor Country that features Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, and Sawyer. These are all small communities that are full of rich tradition and charm around every corner. Harbor Country is home to several shops, restaurants, galleries, and is located along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, providing fun and relaxation all year long.

The St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area itself on not just being a small town or a city, but a community. These are two close-knit communities that are separated by a bridge on the St. Joseph River.

The city of St. Joseph is a popular spot in the Berrien County area and is often recognized by the lighthouse landmark that was built on the pier. With the downtown area located with the Lake Michigan shoreline in sight, the summer months attract people from all over the state of Michigan as well as the Indiana and Chicago area. One of the most popular spots along the lakeshore is Silver Beach, with sand volleyball courts, water tubes for rent, the pier, and the infamous lighthouse. Just a quarter mile in from the beach, the downtown attractions are showcased with a variety of restaurants, bars, and museums. In early May each year, downtown plays host to the Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade, an annual event that promotes pageant queens from 22 surrounding communities.

Benton Harbor, on the other side of the bridge, has recently undergone a bit of a makeover and resurgence in the area with the addition of the Harbor Shores community. Featured in this community is the Harbor Shores golf course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design. Benton Harbor was put back on the map when it hosted the Senior PGA Championship in August of 2012. The event was such a success that it will be appearing once again in Benton Harbor in 2014. Benton Harbor is also proud to have the Sarret Nature Center, which is open year round. With the butterfly house being a popular attraction in the summer and cross country skiing a favorite activity in the winter, the nature trails are open dawn to dusk everyday.

Whether making a stop in St. Joseph or Benton Harbor, this beautiful area along the lakeshore makes for fun no matter the season, and showcases the landscape of southwestern Michigan. Residents are able to enjoy the area year round and make these towns truly feel like a community.

South Haven is a beautiful city that is located mostly in Van Buren County, but stretches into a part of Allegan County as well. South Haven is a beach-town that plays host to many tourists and second home owners, but also thrives from the wonderful year-round residents. Known for the beautiful sunsets that occur over Lake Michigan, South Haven has been featured in publications from a wide variety of national magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times.

One popular landmark in South Haven is the lighthouse on the pier that may receive most of its recognition during the winter months. Frozen waves, blown and crystallized sand, and icicles bending in every direction, cover the lighthouse and show Mother Nature’s beauty on this city, even on the cold lake.

The city of Saugatuck is a unique and special place that is located just south of Holland. With Lake Michigan near, Saugatuck plays host to year round activities with a peak season in the summertime. During this season, tourists and second homeowners flock to be part of the fun that transpires. Saugatuck is filled with a popular downtown area with many shops, restaurants, and casual-day strollers taking in the one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

With many popular attractions for people of all ages, a stop in Saugatuck has to include a trip to Coral Gables Complex, one of the oldest family owned restaurant and bar sites in the state. With food that accommodates everyone in the family, Coral Gables is a perfect spot for a meal, and it's in walking distance from everything in Saugatuck.

As is the case for many West Michigan cities, Saugatuck and Douglas have a beautiful shoreline with sand dunes standing tall in the backdrop. Saugatuck’s Oval Beach may be one of the most famous spots in all of West Michigan due to Conde Naste's Traveler Magazine ranking it as one of the “25 Best Shorelines in the World” on top of MTV ranking Oval Beach as one of the “top five beaches in the United States.”

After a day on the shore admiring the majestic sand dunes, why not take a dune ride? Taking a dune ride can familiarize you with the history of the area and how the dunes came to be. Dune rides have been a popular activity since 1950 and remain under the same family ownership today.

Away from the shore, more fun is to be had. A popular golf course in the state of Michigan is located right in Saugatuck, the Ravines Golf Club, which also has a restaurant. The Ravines Golf Club has been a premier golf course since 1999 and was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Approximately seven minutes away, Clearbrook Golf Club, a four and a half star rated course by Golf Digest, can provide an opportunity to play another 18 holes of very reasonably priced golf.

Whether an active day is in store or you want to simply relax and take a wine tour through the vineyard topped off with a ferry ride, Saugatuck and Douglas await your arrival for an experience you will never forget.
